Easy Ways To Compost
An easy way to compost if you have limited space is to use a garbage can or drum.
Punch holes in the bottom and sides for drainage and aeration, set on bricks or concrete blocks, and layer the materials with soil inside. You can roll it around on its side periodically to help aerate the material inside.
Commercial compost containers are also available. Most are designed so the finished product can be removed through an opening near the bottom.
How about using a plastic garbage bag ?
Toss garden wastes, table scraps, lawn clippings, leaves and anything else that can be composted into a black plastic bag lining a trash can. When the can is filled, add a quart or two of water, just enough to moisten the contents, do not use excessive water.
Tie the bag, then take it out of the can and place it in a shaded spot. Start another bag.
This type of organic composting is called “anaerobic”, as it is without oxygen. I warn you, until the materials are completely rotted, they will smell like your septic tank! unlike the usual earthy smell of an aerobic (oxygen-breathing) compost pile.
If in the Autumn you have leaves in your yard then rake the leaves into plastic bags. Carry them to a shaded area where they can be sorted. Add a little water to each bag, enough to wet the leaves thoroughly. Turn the bags over several times to wet down the leaves, then pour out any extra water.
Broadleaf leaves such as oak, maple, and pecan that are collected this way should be decomposed enough to work into the soil by April or May.
Composting is an organic way to feed your soil inexpensively.
meet you on the garden path.
