Container Gardening
The fun of container gardening is sometimes in the variety of containers that are available, from simple stone or well-weathered terra cotta, to the most elaborate urns from generations ago.
There are so many plants that are available for container gardening, such as ‘The Fairy’ a petite rose well suited for container gardening. This rose bears pale pink blooms from late spring until frost. The Stachys (lambs ears) will appeal to many people. As they get close to the plant, they cannot resist petting their silvery soft leaves!
Vegetables and Herbs
Many gardeners who have little room for vegetable growing can plant their salad veggies in a container. The container should be of a larger size, and have drain holes in the bottom to allow the rain or hose water to soak through. One can also be very artistic with a vegetable container, especially if several different types of plants are used.
You can also grow a great variety of herbs in a container. Place the container by your back door, and you will be able to snip some herbs for cooking without going to far to get them. As well, think of the wonderful aroma that will greet you when you open the door! You will have to place your herbs in the sun for maximum benefit.
Container Garden Design Ideas
A good place to find interesting containers is at a flea market or tag sale. Your imagination will know no bounds as you see many different containers that would be suitable for your garden. Online garden centers such as Yardiac.com also sell a wide variety of great containers.
Window boxes can also come under the name of container gardening, as they also can be filled with many different plants. Try some vines in your window box, ‘Morning Glory’ or ‘Sweet Peas’. ‘Cup and Saucer’ is another good choice, and for evening beauty, who could overlook the ‘Moonflower Vine’ with it’s heady scent and it’s huge white blooms?
To have a really interesting window box, try growing something different - Lemon Verbena, Gazanias, Black- Eyed Susan, Dianthus, Coleus, Diascia are just some of the more unusual plants that will give your window box an interesting and unusual appearance.
The outside windowbox is a thing of beauty. So greatly does it add to the cheerfulness and apparent size of the rooms under which it is placed, that I should advise its use whenever practicable.
