I planted garlic chives near my roses last year, and had a pest-free summer. Also, no black spot (it was horrible the year before), but that could either be luck or the fact I kept everything in the area clean ... Just looked it up in the book, and yup, according to the author, chives also protects against black spot. Well how about that? Yup, companion planting it is.
